The Mystic Masala and Wild Earth Coop in Nepal

The relationship between The Mystic Masala and Wild Earth runs deep. On a recent visit to the cooperative, spice mistress and founder, Glynnis Osher connected with the women in a personal and meaningful way. Whilst talking with the women about their lives an amazing project was discovered.
Devi Sunawar is part of a strong team of successful, hard-working women at Wild Earth. As well as producing the natural, fair trade body care products at the cooperative, Devi has a plan, a project in place, to provide shelter, support, education and training to orphaned and displaced children of the region.
The majority of families in rural Nepal are seasonally forced to leave their villages for hard labour in the cities. It is common for small children to be brought along to work because they simply cannot be left behind to fend for themselves. (more)
BARBARA SANSONI is an artist, writer and designer. She has exhibited her drawings and woven panels in Asia, Europe and North America. She founded and has been for thirty years the designer for Barefoot, a company of rural hand weavers in Sri Lanka. Her work for Barefoot is characterized by its colours and simple rectilinear forms.
“Barefoot products are completely handmade. The cotton yarn we use has been dyed and woven by hand. All materials including dyes are safe and eco-friendly. The craft skills at Barefoot are timeless. Nothing is mass-produced. If our quality is remarkable, it’s because our methods are. Barefoot is a rural industry run by us wherever we are needed. We function as a cottage industry where workers take work home. We teach skills & assert no time pressure on our hand weavers or needlewomen…they are not cheap substitutes for machinery… which is why our things are expensive, and will last a lifetime.”
